Thriving in Summer Intensives

Making the most out of your summer intensive experience

Summer intensives are exciting in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. New studios, new teachers, long days, sore muscles, and moments where everything suddenly clicks. They push you, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Taking Care of your body is part of the work

It’s easy to think that progress only happens during class, but I’ve learned that what you do after the studio matters just as much. When your body is working for hours every day, recovery stops being optional, it becomes part of your training.

When I stay consistent with small recovery routines, I notice a huge difference in how I feel the next morning. I’m less distracted by soreness, more focused in class, and able to give my full attention to corrections instead of just pushing through discomfort.

Turning corrections into confidence

One of the most overwhelming parts of summer intensives is the amount of information you’re given in such a short time. Corrections can feel fleeting, here one second, gone the next.

What’s helped me most is slowing everything down outside of class. Taking a moment to reflect, replay combinations in my head, or mentally revisit corrections allows them to sink in. Over time, this turns quick verbal notes into something deeper: muscle memory and confidence.

Remembering there’s more than just the studio

While working hard is the priority, some of the most meaningful moments of an intensive happen outside of class. Shared exhaustion, spontaneous coffee runs, practicing together after hours, or watching a show with friends, these experiences shape the summer just as much as the training itself.

Making space for connection doesn’t take away from your focus. If anything, it reminds you why you love dancing in the first place.

Final thoughts

Summer intensives are intense for a reason, but they’re also a rare opportunity to grow, reflect, and connect. By taking care of your body, being intentional with your learning, and allowing yourself to enjoy the people around you, you give yourself the chance to thrive, not just survive.
